Twin Harbors

Overview
Two 450-foot Liberty Ships were touted by media as a ‘first-of-its-kind’ salvage operation as Ballard brought the aged vessels to their final resting place.

Scope of Work
In three months, Ballard crews cleared the vessels of environmental hazards, including 25,600 gallons of bunker oil and 8.93 million pounds of steel.

Innovative Solutions
An array of environmental regulations and a lack of suitable facilities in Puget Sound made traditional methods of disposal all but impossible. Simply sinking old ships is no longer allowed, nor is dismantling them on the water.

Results
This project was completed with accolades from state and federal environmental regulators, in addition to local media, for green ship-breaking methods.
